Child wrote many of these letters to her sister-in-law, Lydia B. Child, and to her mother-in-law; these letters deal mostly with her married life, family relations, her husband David Child's business ventures and illnesses, the slavery issue and abolition movement, and the Civil War. There are also approximately 100 letters to the Lorings: Ellis Gray, his wife Louisa, and their daughter Anna. One folder (A/C536-9) contains receipts signed by Lydia M. Child, and was not microfilmed.

A Boston lawyer and abolitionist who used his legal training to aid runaway slaves, Loring was an organizer of the New England Anti-Slavery Society. He married Louisa Gilman (1797-1868) in 1827.
